Receding gums are unattractive and uncomfortable. They expose the tooth root, which is a darker color than the enamel of the tooth crown. Receding gums can make your teeth look crooked, even if they ‘re really straight. And receding gums make your teeth sensitive.
In the past, correcting receding gums required highly invasive surgery, but the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique allows us to correct your receding gums with a shorter recovery time and less discomfort. If you are looking for the most modern and comfortable way to correct your receding gums in Summerlin, Las Vegas, please call (702) 873-0324 or email us for an appointment with a cosmetic dentist at the office of Dr. James B. Polley today.
Benefits of Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique ®
A gum graft used to be the only option for treating receding gums. It involved cutting tissue from a donor site, then stitching it over your exposed roots. The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique ® is a different approach to repairing receding gums. Instead of taking tum tissue from a distant donor site, local gum tissue is repositioned to cover nearby tooth roots.
The benefits of this approach include:
- Less discomfort
- Only one small “pinhole” incision
- Faster recovery
- No need for stitches
- More attractive results
There’s less discomfort because there’s less cutting. A gum grafting procedure involves not only cutting out the large graft from the donor site, but also cutting the recipient site to merge the two together. With less cutting, there’s less discomfort. There’s no need for stitches partly because of the reduction in cutting, but also because the technique uses a collagen “glue” to hold the tissue in place. Collagen is the most common component of gum tissue, so the collagen is naturally absorbed and the gums grow back around the tooth where they’ve been placed.
The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique ® can also give more attractive results because it’s using real gum tissue that’s supposed to be there, not tissue from further away that might not match the color or texture of the recipient region.
Receding Gums Causes and Prevention
It’s important to understand that the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® only works to re-establish your gums at their former level. It isn’t a gum treatment, and it can’t prevent your gums from receding again if you don’t address the reasons why your gums receded in the first place. Some of the more common causes of receding gums include:
- Gum disease
- Overbrushing or brushing and flossing too hard
- Tobacco use, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco
- Exposure to stomach acid due to vomiting or GERD
- Piercings in the tongue, lip or cheek
It’s also important to note that genetics plays a large role in determining how vulnerable you are to receding gums. If your gums are thin or if you have a tendency to foster particularly aggressive bacteria, or if your immune system responds to gum disease in certain ways, you may be at an increased risk for a recurrence of receding gums.
Prior to performing your gum rejuvenation, we will talk to you about your risk of relapse, which, in most cases, is slight. We will also help you understand how to care for your gums and hopefully make your results permanent.
