One of the benefits of dental implants is that they can look just like your natural teeth. However, that’s easier said than done, and it requires a skilled implant dentist and cosmetic dentist to ensure you get the best possible results from your dental implants.
During your consultation, we can talk about the specific goals for your dental implants and the treatment plan we will use to ensure you get the best appearance for your dental implants in Las Vegas. Please call (702) 873-0324 or email us for an appointment with a cosmetic dentist at the office of Dr. James B. Polley.
The Dental Crown
The dental crown is the visible part of your dental implant. Similar to the crown of your natural tooth, the implant crown attaches to the root and is designed for appearance and function. We want to ensure the most attractive and natural appearance for your dental crown.
The color of the crown is one of the things that people might notice first. The challenge for a dental implant crown is to give it the translucency of natural tooth enamel without revealing that inside the crowned tooth is not dentin and pulp, but ceramic and titanium. Modern dental crowns, including those made with CEREC, can do this because they have subtle color changes embedded inside that simulate the transition to dentin and pulp while at the same time hiding the content at the center of the implant.
We might also recommend teeth whitening for your natural teeth to help them get an attractive appearance that the dental implant can then match.
The shape of the crown is also crucial. It has to match your opposite tooth closely enough that it looks like a naturally matched companion. But it can’t be too similar or else it will look just like a mirror image, which isn’t natural, either.
The dental implant has to be placed between your natural teeth so that it is properly balanced. It shouldn’t crowd your other teeth, should be straight and upright, and should still be in a place where the bone is thick enough to support the implant.
Computer-designed placement guides help ensure that a dental implant is put right where the dentist wants it, but experience and skill are still necessary to consistently get the optimal placement for your dental implants.
Managing Gum Tissue
Your gums are just as important to ensuring attractive results with your dental implants as the implants themselves. One of the biggest challenges implant dentists face is ensuring that the gum tissue around the implant is maintained. Gum tissue doesn’t adhere to and grow along dental implants the way it does with natural teeth, so it takes care to ensure adequate gum tissue remains.
Another potential problem is that your gums may be translucent, which can make the dental implant visible underneath. When it looks like this may be a problem, we may adjust the size and shape of the dental crown and/or use colored dental implants to ensure a natural appearance.
