When Are Dental Crowns Right for You?

A dental crown is a cap or sheath that fits over your tooth. Ideally, the crown will cover the entire visible surface of your tooth, giving it a beautiful and robust new surface.

The most common reasons why people get dental crowns include:

  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Cavities that weaken the tooth
  • Large fillings that failed
  • Cosmetic restoration
  • Topping a dental implant

Dental crowns are best when your tooth needs protection and support. By covering the entire exterior of the tooth, a crown protects it from further damage, including wear, decay, and fracturing. The strong crown also gives the tooth additional strength so that the tooth can hold up under the stresses of biting and chewing. Beautification is typically a side benefit, though we can use a dental crown for cosmetic purposes. It can give all the same cosmetic benefits as a dental veneer.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC is a chairside restoration CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/manufacturing) system. In other words, it’s a machine that combines computer software with a milling unit to design and create restorations in our dental office. In addition to dental crowns, CEREC can make many kinds of ceramic restorations, including dental bridges, tooth-colored fillings, and dental veneers.

To use this technology for restorations, Dr. Polley will first prepare your tooth or teeth for restoration. He then uses a digital laser scanner to take a 3D picture of your tooth as an impression. You don’t have to make an impression by biting into a tray of uncomfortable goo.

Dr. Polley then uploads the 3D picture of your tooth to the computer, where he will design your restoration. He custom-crafts the restoration to fit your tooth perfectly regarding size and shape. Dr. Polley will show you a block of colors to help you choose a color that best suits your smile. Often, we recommend teeth whitening first so your crown can match your teeth at their brightest.

Once your design is complete, it’s sent to the computer-controlled milling machine containing the correct colored block of ceramic material. The machine follows Dr. Polley’s precise design to create your new restoration. The machine creates your computer-aided restoration in anywhere from four to 20 minutes. Once it’s ready, Dr. Polley will check the fit and color. It might need extra finishing, including tweaking the color, firing, and polishing. That doesn’t take long, and you’ll have your crown within an hour or two.

Advantages of a Same-Day Dental Crown

CEREC dental restorations like CEREC dental crowns offer many benefits:

  • Same-day placement and treatment
  • No temporary restorations that feel uncomfortable, look unattractive, and lack stability
  • Plaster-free impressions
  • Perfect color matching
  • Long-lasting impressions
  • Designed by Dr. Polley – no miscommunication happens

These advantages of CEREC restorations demonstrate why it’s the ideal treatment option. Why wouldn’t you want a CEREC restoration?

Only some dental problems are suitable for immediate restorations using the CEREC. It is ideal for patients who only need one or at most two dental restorations such as a dental crown, dental bridge, inlay, onlay, or dental veneer. In most cases, we use CEREC for all dental crowns and bridgework.

Get Dental Crowns in One Day in Las Vegas

Usually, a new crown means having impressions taken. A tray full of a gelatinous substance has to sit in your mouth until it solidifies, usually a few minutes or more. For some, this isn’t anything more than uncomfortable, but for others, it’s a source of dental anxiety and causes them to avoid restoring their teeth. Las Vegas dental patients don’t need to worry about impressions when repairing or replacing teeth with Dr. Polley.

Dr. Polley uses a wand-like scanner to take digital scans of your teeth. The iTero scanner gives error-free “impressions” without the discomfort of holding the tray in your mouth.

iTero connects directly to CEREC, making the process a breeze. At the office of James B. Polley, dentistry has evolved: a new crown in one day with no impressions.
