Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching: Symptoms, Causes and What to Do

If you find yourself grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw, this is not something to simply ignore. While these issues can be caused by stress or anxiety, there are other causes that you may not be able to treat on your own, such as missing teeth, crooked teeth, or a misaligned bite. This is why it is important to call Dr. Polley’s office.

If you grind your teeth, you may notice that your teeth are worn, damaged or sensitive, you may have pain in your jaw, and others may complain about it while you sleep. Teeth grinding is also known as bruxism. If you clench your jaw, you may experience headaches or jaw pain.  Jaw clenching is sometimes a part of bruxism.

If left untreated, these issues could lead to teeth damage, headaches, or conditions such as TMJ. The most important thing you can do is to visit us to have your teeth checked out.  If the problems are with the spacing or alignment of your teeth, we can straighten your teeth and fix your bite, thus alleviating your issues.

A mouth guard can be a good treatment method, especially if you grind your teeth while you are asleep. If this is the treatment for you, Dr. Polley will fit you for a custom mouth guard that will fit comfortably. Another simple thing you can do is to try and relax and reduce stress in your life. While this may not solve all of your problems, being stressed may be enhancing your bruxism.
