We usually talk about the CAD/CAM system CEREC for its ability to make dental crowns in one day. And it’s great for that purpose, with results that rival or exceed those for lab-made crowns. But CEREC can be used for any ceramic restoration, including inlays, onlays, and even veneers.
Now a new study shows that CEREC veneers actually hold up very well in real-world situations. Although we’re probably still not going to use CEREC for a full smile makeover, this does show that it could be a great option when you’re looking for one or two veneers. That means people can get chipped teeth repaired or have gaps in their smile closed in just one visit.
High Success with Hundreds of Veneers
For this study, researchers placed 197 ceramic laminate veneers in 71 patients. They monitored the restorations for five years. There were two types of veneers in the study, with 92 IPS Empress and 105 IPS e.max veneers. Researchers looked at the survival of veneers, their success rate, many different aspects of appearance and performance, as well as patient satisfaction.
The study showed that the results had a survival rate of 99% after the five years, with just two fractures. Overall, the success rate of the veneers was rated at 96.4%. Overall patient satisfaction was 95.5%.
Although both types of veneers had good success rates, one had higher success than the other. The e.max veneers had a 100% survival rate. They had no chips, no debonding, and a 90% perfect color match. No patients in this study experienced hypersensitivity related to their veneers.
The results of this study are good, and we hope that they continue the study to show how well the veneers hold up over even longer time frames.
CEREC Is a Great Choice for Your Restorations
This study gives us more support for the quality and longevity of CEREC veneers. If you are looking for high-quality ceramic restorations that can be placed in one visit, CEREC restorations are a great choice.
In the hands of an experienced cosmetic dentist, these restorations can match the quality of restorations produced in a lab. And the convenience of getting them placed in one visit means they can help you restore your smile according to your need.
If you have a chipped tooth, you might in the past have decided on dental bonding to treat it. The main advantage of dental bonding is that it can be completed in one visit, but it’s softer, discolors over time, and doesn’t last as long as veneers. With CEREC, you can get longer-lasting, stain resistant veneers instead. And when you want to close an unattractive gap in your smile, CEREC can do that in one day as well.
