Sensitive teeth are a common dental health concern that causes your teeth to be extra sensitive when eating foods that are hot, cold, or sweet. This occurs when the dentin on your teeth becomes exposed due to receding gum tissue. This part of your teeth that is newly exposed is not covered by hard enamel and has lots of roots leading to the inner part of your teeth, so that when you eat something hot, cold, or sweet, the sensations will go straight to the nerve in the center of your tooth, resulting in sensitivity.
There are a variety of factors that can cause your teeth to be sensitive, including the following:
- Brushing too hard
- Gum disease
- Receding gums
- Grinding your teeth
- Cracks or decay in your teeth
- Eating a lot of acidic foods
- Your age
If you have sensitive teeth, the first step is to come to Dr. Polley’s office. He will look at your teeth and help you develop a plan to manage your sensitivity. Good dental hygiene and visiting our office regularly is a good place to start. Also, if you’ve had some dental work done recently, such as crowns or root planing, some temporary sensitivity can result.
Make sure you use a soft bristled toothbrush. If the bristles are very hard it could irritate your gums more. A toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth can be a good idea as well. Also, avoiding acidic foods could help as well. If your teeth sensitivity is due to grinding your teeth, Dr. Polley can create a custom mouth guard to help prevent this issue.
If you still have issues with sensitivity, Dr. Polley can use fillings or fluoride to help seal the exposed roots of your teeth that are causing the issue. Sensitive teeth is not just something you have to live with. There are many solutions available to help alleviate this issue.
