According to research by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), your smile may be your best bet to looking younger despite advancing years.
And if your smile is showing its age, cosmetic dentistry can turn back the clock and help you look younger.
The AACD surveyed more than 1000 people about what features best resisted aging. Here’s what people said:
- Smile 45%
- Eyes 38%
- Body shape 10%
- Hair 6%
- Legs 5%
The smile was even more important to people who had firsthand experience with aging. More than half (54%) of people over age 50 said their smile was most resistant to aging, compared to only 39% of younger respondents.
And people backed this up by saying they were most willing to invest in their smile over other effects of aging. More than three-quarters (80%) said they were prepared to spend money to fight the effects of aging, and most of them said they would invest in their smile (62%). Other ways to combat aging were much less popular, including weight loss (48%), thinning hair (33%), dark circles under the eyes (33%), wrinkles (31%), and spider veins (28%). This shows how important we all believe our smiles to be.
How Cosmetic Dentistry Can Rejuvenate Your Smile
Although our smile can make us look younger, it doesn’t always do it without help. Unfortunately, teeth staining can show our age as discoloration accumulates on our teeth because of coffee, tea, wine, cigarette smoke, and other discoloring influences. Fortunately, for many people teeth whitening can eliminate staining and help you look years younger.
Another effect of age on your teeth is wear. Over time, our teeth wear down and become shorter, and people think someone with shorter teeth is older than people with longer teeth. Porcelain veneers and sometimes dental crowns can be used to lengthen your teeth. It can even be used to create youthful proportions in your smile, such as the longer incisors that are common in younger smiles.
