Root Canal

Do you suffer from toothaches? Your body is probably trying to tell you something. If tooth decay or injury has caused internal damage to your tooth's sensitive nerve, a root canal may save the tooth from extraction. Modern technology makes root canal therapy convenient and comfortable. In most cases, the procedure is performed in a single office visit, and oral sedation can be administered to optimize comfort.

What is a root canal? Your teeth consist of several layers: the outer layers, enamel and dentin, and the inner layer, the pulp or “nerve.” The tooth pulp branches out, forming canals that lead to the bloodstream. The pulp nourishes the tooth and disposes of waste. A cavity, injury, or fracture can make the pulp susceptible to bacterial infection, which can kill the nerve and create pressure within the tooth.

When Dr. Polley performs your root canal, he will disinfect the bacteria-ridden canal and extract the damaged pulp, fill the canal with manmade material, and seal the tooth for protection. Anesthesia can be administered during the procedure, and over-the-counter medications help with minor soreness and inflammation.
