Periodontal (Gum Disease) Therapy
Periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, accounts for 75% of adult tooth loss in the United States, and new research has linked it to systemic health problems, like heart disease and stroke. If we find that you have gum disease, we may suggest non-surgical therapy to eliminate the disease and restore healthy tissue.
Gum disease occurs when hardened plaque below the gum line causes irritation and infection. Combined with bacteria from decaying food particles, the infection spreads quickly. Symptoms are mild and include bleeding gums, redness, and swelling. Many patients don’t even know they have gum disease, and it can escalate quickly to cause gum recession, bone loss, and loosening of teeth.
Regular checkups and daily brushing and flossing can prevent plaque from forming below the gum line. If we find that you do have gum disease, we may recommend non-surgical therapy:
- Scaling to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line
- Root planing to reduce rough areas on teeth roots
- Arestin antibiotic therapy to battle infection
- Restorative treatments to eliminate bacteria
